Bieszczady. The Bieszczady Mountains are located on the southeast part of Poland. They are a natural border with Slovakia and Ukraine. The pride of the Bieszczady Mountains is the Bieszczady National Park (UNESCO biosphere reserve). 'In the Bieszczady one can find some 900 species of vascular plants, including 42 species of plants protected in the Bieszczadzki National Park, which encompasses the highest sections of the Western Bieszczady Mountains. With approximately 200 unique species, the fauna of the Bieszczady is varied as well. Such big mammals as the European bison, brown bear, wild boar, lynx, wolf, deer and wildcat live here alongside many rare species of birds, including the Ural owl, golden eagle, Alpine hedge-sparrow and pipit.' Częstochowa.  Along with Licheń, Częstochowa is a holy city for Polish Catholics. In fact, Christians from around the world are organising pilgrimages to the Jasna Góra monastery, based at Częstochowa. The city was invaded many times by Swedes, Russians and Germans who tried to take over the monastery, always unsuccessfully. Poles owe the victories of the wars to Our Lady of Częstochowa (also called Black Madonna). Every year more than 5 million tourists are visiting the place, majority of whom are pilgrims. During the communist times in Poland (1945 - 1989), the authorities tried to transform Częstochowa into an industrial city and close the monastery, however after intense strikes the communist authorities reversed their decision.
